How to Check a Dead Motherboard with a Multimeter

When a circuit board stop working, the first thing you should try is to check the connections. If a jack is loose or there’s a broken wire, or even a blown fuse, any of these things could cause the board to fail. 

Naturally, you’ll want to get this fixed as soon as possible, but how are you going to do that if you don’t know how the board is supposed to work? The only way to find out what’s wrong is to take it apart and check it with a multimeter.

The Motherboard

So, you have got this old computer that has been sitting in the garage for years, and you want to bring it back to life. The only problem is it won’t turn on. 

The good news is that dead computer boards are often pretty easy to bring back to life. One of the easiest ways to check if the motherboard is dead is to check the voltage regulator assembly (VRM), which is a circuit board that regulates the power to the other components. It has an input from the power supply, and it delivers voltage to the other components.

A motherboard is an essential part of your PC, as it houses your CPU and RAM, as well as various ports used to connect your computer with external devices, such as a monitor or a printer. 

If you have a desktop computer, your motherboard is probably mounted to the metal case that holds all internal components. However, if you have a laptop or a netbook, then your motherboard is usually embedded onto the system board.

Power up the motherboard and let it run for at least a minute, then touch each of the leads of the meter to the motherboard. 

You should see a change on the meter when you touch each lead to the motherboard, for example, a change from 1.5v to 0.5v. If you do not see a change, this means the motherboard is broken, and you need to buy a new one.

It is strongly recommended to check all the parameters of the motherboard before you buy it. For this, you should use a multimeter to check the resistance of the contact surfaces, the presence of voltage and current through them, the presence or absence of short circuits, and others.

What Causes the Death of a Motherboard?

So, you just bought a new motherboard, and now it’s dead! You have tried everything, from clearing the CMOS to swapping out cheap parts, but nothing seems to be working. 

So, what is the problem? It turns out that motherboards don’t just die for no reason. In most cases, there is some kind of physical damage to the motherboard, but this is not always the case.

Even if the motherboard is physically fine, it could have already been damaged by an electrical surge or a lightning strike.

Can you still bring back the Dead Motherboard to life?
