How to Check a Knock Sensor with a Multimeter

There are many different reasons for the knock sensor to activate, and the most common reason is a bad spark plug. In this case, the knock sensor informs the driver about this problem by turning on a  warning light on the dashboard.

The best way to check a knock sensor with a multimeter is to use a multimeter. You can use a multimeter to do a continuity test with the key on. 

Knock Sensor Check 

To check the Knock Sensor, you must first remove it from the engine. The knock sensor is located in the intake manifold of the engine, usually near the distributor cap. Remove the knock sensor. You will probably need to drill out the rivets that hold the knock sensor in place. After removal, test it with a multimeter as follows: 

  1. Set the multimeter to measure resistance, select the lowest resistance range, and put the red test lead on the positive battery terminal and the black test lead on the negative. terminal (ground). 
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position, but do not start the engine. Hold  the multimeters against the knock sensor. 
  3. Check  if the multimeter detects anything. If so, it  means that the knock sensor is sending a signal to the car’s computer.
