Testing chainsaws with a multimeter is a relatively simple procedure, but you need to know what you’re doing. 

While it may seem like a good idea to try to do this without proper guidance, you will likely injure yourself in the process.

If you intend to test chainsaw coils, you need a multimeter; an analog multimeter is fine. You also need a good and functional chainsaw. 

Make sure you know what part you are testing. If you are testing a coil, make sure it is the coil you are testing; if you’re testing a capacitor, make sure it’s a capacitor.
